The
Manse July 2010
Dear All,
What
a summer we are having. Sun and rain, sun and rain but I’m not complaining as last year we barely
had summer! As I write the sun is having a rest and the sky is grey. At least it’s
not raining at the moment. But I must not be ungrateful as I’m sure the garden needs it to let the
flowers flourish and grow.
Talking of growing, I had my grandchildren over last weekend
and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly they are growing. My granddaughter, Kelsey Shay will be eight
in October and my grandson Leon James, who I fondly call ‘Little man’, will be one in November. Although
he is only just over eight months he is able to walk with a little assistance.
Children
grow as they are supposed to and time goes on; far quicker than I can keep pace with. Yet it’s interesting
to know that not only I but all of you are continuing to grow. I don’t mean just growing old but
hopefully we are growing wiser, growing in knowledge and understanding and hopefully we are growing more patient.
My eldest daughter says she is amazed at how patient I am. I’ll take that as a compliment.
But seriously, as we continue our Christian walk, we should never stop growing in love, patience, self-control, kindness,
generosity, joy, peace, gentleness and faithfulness. After all isn’t that what we called to do?
Isn’t that living the Christian life?
If you are anything like me you are
still a work in progress and rightly so for we never stop growing in Christ Jesus. And if, like me you
struggle, ask our Lord for strength, wisdom and guidance and don’t forget to follow His directions.
No matter what season of life you are in never stop growing.
Bye for now.
Your
Minister

CHURCH AUCTION
Saturday 10th July 2010
This was a unique occasion for our Church and there is no doubt that it was an intriguing experience
for all concerned. The main thanks must go to Jessie Tarbet (ably aided by Graeme) for
the immense amount of planning required for this to be set up. A hard-working team of around 10 of us spent
nearly 9 hours spread over three evenings sorting, numbering and cataloguing the 201 items so kindly donated by members and
friends. Early on the morning of the auction we again `mustered our troops` and were in position to keep an eye on the tables
while members of the public came in to view before the actual start of the auction at 10.30a.m.
Unfortunately the ghastly weather certainly had an adverse effect on the number of people coming along
in the hope of catching a bargain. However, thanks to
the skill of Steven Dewar who did his very best to whip up enthusiasm from the assembled company, the
sum of nearly £760 was eventually gathered in.
None of this could have been possible but for the generosity of all those who donated an amazing assortment of belongings
many of them dating from times long past. The Church owes you all a debt of gratitude but it was such a
pity that so many of our friends were unavoidably away on holiday and therefore missed all the fun.
Throughout the three evenings and from early on the Saturday morning Ella and Doris dispensed hugely welcome
tea, coffee and biscuits to all who appeared in the Hall. Of course on the Auction Day a charge of
50p was made for visitors and this also swelled the coffers. This was quite an undertaking for our
two stalwarts and they were both given flowers from the Church the next day (the reason for the following letter).
With the weather being so deplorable and our energy levels flagging the refreshments were hugely appreciated by every
one of us.

Junior Church Prize-giving Sunday
13th June 2010
One of the highlights of
the Church Calendar is surely the Junior Church Prize-giving and this proved to be no exception this year.
The five children did very well indeed. First of all they read to us the Story of the
Talents and how well they all stepped up to the microphone, each one of them knowing exactly when it was their turn.
Then we were invited to “Come and Celebrate”. It was obvious the children loved
singing this especially when they clapped their hands which they did with gusto. Ailsa gave a
most beautiful rendering of the theme from Schindler`s List on her flute, it was spellbinding. The
McGhees are a very talented musical family. Will the twins Duncan and Eilidh follow in their older brother and sister`s footsteps
and will our next musical interlude feature Fergus with his guitar? - or who knows what Fiona might do
in due course. Of course
the highlight for the children is the actual prize-giving and this year the carefully chosen books were presented by Mrs.
Phyllis Miller. Three beautiful
floral arrangements adorned the Communion Table and these were presented to Evelyn, Phyllis and Morag as
token of our appreciation of all their work as they give of their time and talent to teach our children throughout
the year.
